This full-size reproduction of the Mercantile Marine War Medal commemorates the vital contribution made by Merchant Navy personnel during the First World War.

The medal was awarded by the Board of Trade to eligible merchant seamen who completed one or more voyages through a designated war or danger zone during World War I. Merchant vessels maintained essential supply routes while their crews faced threats including submarines, mines and surface raiders.

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of King George V. The reverse depicts the bow of a vessel within a laurel wreath and bears the inscription “FOR WAR SERVICE MERCANTILE MARINE 1914–1918”. The distinctive ribbon combines light green and scarlet sections separated by a narrow white stripe.
