French Legion d’Honneur Chevalier Full-Size Medal

The French Legion d’Honneur Chevalier Full-Size Medal is a reproduction of the fifth class of France’s highest national order.

Established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the Légion d’honneur recognises outstanding military or civilian service to France. The Order has five classes, with Chevalier—meaning Knight—forming its fifth and entry grade.

The distinctive decoration features a white-enamelled star suspended from a wreath and worn from the traditional red ribbon.

The award has particular significance for British Second World War veterans. Since the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings, the French Government has appointed surviving British veterans who participated in D-Day or the wider campaign to liberate France as Chevaliers of the Légion d’honneur.
