French Croix de Guerre 1914–1918 Full-Size Medal
The French Croix de Guerre 1914–1918 Full-Size Medal is a reproduction of the celebrated French First World War decoration awarded in recognition of citations for acts of bravery and distinguished wartime service.
Meaning “Cross of War”, the Croix de Guerre was created by a law promulgated on 8 April 1915. It provided a visible distinction for French and Allied military personnel who were individually cited in official orders for their conduct during the First World War. Civilians and militarised personnel could also receive the decoration for qualifying wartime service.
The bronze decoration takes the form of a four-armed cross with crossed swords. Its central medallion depicts the French Republic wearing a Phrygian cap and laurel wreath, surrounded by the inscription “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE”. The reverse of this version carries the dates 1914–1918.
The medal is worn from a green ribbon with seven narrow red stripes. Citation devices could be attached to the ribbon to identify the level at which the recipient had been mentioned:
- Bronze star – citation at regimental or brigade level
- Silver star – citation at divisional level
- Silver-gilt star – citation at army corps level
- Bronze palm – citation at army level
