Territorial Force War Medal 1914–1919 Miniature

The Territorial Force War Medal 1914–1919 Miniature is a reproduction of the rarest of the five principal British First World War campaign medals.

Instituted in April 1920, the medal recognised members of the Territorial Force and Territorial Force Nursing Service who volunteered for overseas service at the beginning of the First World War and subsequently served outside the United Kingdom.

To qualify, a recipient generally had to:

• Be serving with the Territorial Force on 4 August 1914; or
• Have completed at least four years’ previous Territorial Force service and rejoined by 30 September 1914
• Have volunteered for overseas service on or before 30 September 1914
• Have served outside the United Kingdom between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918
• Not have qualified for either the 1914 Star or 1914–15 Star

Only 33,944 Territorial Force War Medals were awarded, including medals presented to members of the Territorial Force Nursing Service. This limited issue makes it considerably less common than the British War Medal or Victory Medal.

The obverse features the left-facing portrait of King George V. The reverse bears the inscription “TERRITORIAL WAR MEDAL” and the dates 1914–19 within a laurel wreath surmounted by a crown.

The miniature is worn from its distinctive yellow ribbon with two dark green stripes.
